Animal Motifs

This collection features Tatreez motifs that imitate or bear resemblance to animals. The motifs are from different regions in Palestine, some of which have universal representation. Embroiderers drew inspiration from everyday objects for these motifs. While motif names were derived from these familiar elements, they didn't necessarily have to closely resemble the objects.

This is evident in various Tatreez motifs, especially those depicting animals. For instance, Pigeons, Roosters, and Geese (Swans) closely resemble their animal counterparts, whereas motifs like the Eye of the Cow and the Eye of the Camel are not direct replicas of the name. This serves as a compelling example of how names primarily acted as labels for women to discuss and commission their embroidery work.
