When it comes to Tatreez, the choice of thread is crucial in bringing your designs to life. Various types of threads can be used, each offering unique qualities and effects.
1. Pearl Cotton Thread
Pearl Cotton (also called Perlé Cotton) is a smooth thread with a slight sheen.
Size 8 is the most commonly used thread for modern Tatreez projects, especially when stitching on 14-count Aida cloth. Size 8 refers to the thickness or weight of the thread. It is slightly thicker than embroidery floss but thinner than size 5 or size 3 pearl cotton.
The larger the thread size number, the finer the thread becomes. Size 8 is a versatile option that works well for both intricate details and filling larger areas.

2. Embroidery Floss
Embroidery floss is also commonly used for Tatreez due to its wide availability in craft stores. Size 25 is the most popular.
It is made of 6 loosely twisted strands that can be separated and recombined to achieve different thicknesses and effects. It can be kept as is or separated into strands of three or two before stitching to achieve the desired thickness.
When working with embroidery floss, it is essential to ensure that the strands are properly separated and not twisted or tangled. Although time-consuming, this will ensure cleaner and smoother embroidery.

3. Pearl Cotton vs Embroidery Floss
Tatreez is traditionally stitched with different types of thread, the most common being embroidery floss and pearl cotton.
Embroidery floss is made of 6 separate strands that can be pulled apart and used in different combinations. This makes it very versatile; you can control how thick or fine your stitches look.
Pearl cotton (sometimes called perle cotton) comes in a single twisted strand that is not meant to be separated. It has a beautiful sheen and comes in different thicknesses, such as size 5, 8, or 12.

2 strands of embroidery floss ≈ Pearl Cotton size 12 (fine detail work)
